Wow – that was emotional! My plans to arrive early in Eastbourne were scuppered by an over-heating van, so a three hour call out by the AA wasn’t the best preparation for the ironman distance challenge I had to do the next day! After only 4 hours sleep I awoke at 4:00am and headed to transition for the swim. It was beautiful! A jump off the pier to start with calmed any nerves! The water was warm, flat and calm and I was able to drift off in my head to Mallorca with my lovely family! 1 hour 16 minutes later I was out and getting ready for the bike leg – 112 miles which I thought might take between 7 and 8 hours. Well, I was flying along and completed it in 6 hours (including a very silly crash after 88 miles, where I had a momentary lapse in concentration and came off at 25mph!) – which could have been closer to 5 hours 30 minutes if I didn’t crash! The run was absolutely brutal – the hardest thing I have ever done. The heat, the hills, the blood – it certainly was tough, but I didn’t stop running and completed it in a much longer time than anticipated! My dad and close friend Ed had came to cheer me on and I was glad to have them at the finish line after 12 hours and 45 minutes! My thoughts were of Luke all the way round and how inspirational he was and how he would have not stopped or given up. He helped me get it done. Thank you to everyone for their generosity and kind words xx
